Jacksonville Business Journal: the human cloud gives companies an edge.

June 1, 2018

The world of work is changing in dramatic ways around the globe. The “human cloud” has emerged as the new connection point for employers and contingent workers. Think of it as an on-demand platform where freelancers, independent contractors and part-time workers are available on a local, national or global scale.

JoAnne Estrada, global head of contingent workforce solutions at Randstad Sourceright, suggests that the human cloud gives businesses more flexibility via non-traditional employment arrangements that make their companies more dynamic and efficient. With seniors as the fastest growing segment of gig workers, Florida is well positioned to lead this trend.

“Organizations are starting to see the human cloud as a tool for completely revolutionizing the way work is structured,” writes Estrada. “Instead of classifying industry into job titles, the human cloud allows workloads to be divided into distinct tasks, tapping a vast pool of skilled talent. By paying for a distinct task, organizations decrease overhead, reduce worker inactivity and scale their labor force more precisely.”

“[The human cloud] includes a host of new technologies — from web-based platforms to freelancer management systems — that permit workers to offer specialized services to a broader market of competing companies,” Estrada continues. “For employers, it allows solicitation of a wider pool of specialized talent that can deliver output on-spec and on-demand.”
