While the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports unemployment numbers have edged up slightly in June, employers are still challenged by an environment of talent scarcity. Some companies are looking for new talent strategies to retain workers, and are focusing on converting temporary and seasonal workers into full-time, permanent or contingent roles.

“Summer hiring is at record levels,” said Randstad Sourceright CEO Rebecca Henderson. “Employers are increasingly using summer hiring as a way to try out employees and turn the best seasonal talent into year-round, permanent or contingent hires.”

But offering more hours is only one piece of the attraction and retention puzzle. Compensation is still king. Workers want to feel challenged, valued and rewarded, and companies realize they’ll need to work harder to retain great talent.

Staffing industry watchers suggest that employees should negotiate with an existing employer first, before jumping ship for more money elsewhere. Employers may need to be flexible in order to keep skilled talent on board.
