A panel discussion at the first-ever HR Festival Asia focused on the lack of women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) roles. This prevailing gender inequality has the potential to create challenges as the region maintains its dynamic growth in the years ahead.
At the event, Anthea Collier, managing director for Randstad Sourceright in Asia-Pacific, was one of four experts to lead a panel discussion on the STEM talent life cycle — from recruitment to retention — and how employers can close the skills gap by helping women gain the skills needed for STEM roles. Topics included the need to create a supportive and inclusive environment, while also putting mechanisms in place to minimize unconscious gender bias.
Collier specifically spoke to the importance of “optics” in talent acquisition. “Showcase women employees and create microsites within your website about them,” she explained, “Show that you are like the women you want to attract.”
