Recruiting Daily Advisor: finding skilled talent means considering ‘all of the above.’

In a tightening labor market, employers are often stretched to find and keep skilled talent. The solution for many is to expand their contingent worker strategy, deploying more freelance, contract, and part-time employees. But is this enough?

A recent survey by Randstad Sourceright of 800 C-suite and HR leaders found that, while the vast majority of employers will turn to contingent talent, only 11% plan to look inward to solve their talent challenges by retraining current employees to fill open positions.

Although many employers feel they must decide between the two approaches, the truth is that both can be part of an effective talent strategy. Training existing employees on new skills can help with retention, while attracting new talent by demonstrating a clear path for ongoing development and growth.

JoAnne Estrada, global head of contingent workforce solutions for Randstad Sourceright writes, “Employers that prevail over the competition will be those that refuse a forced choice between upskilling existing employees or engaging external talent. Instead, successful employers will adopt an approach that uses the best of each strategy to complement the other.”
