Human Resource Executive: upskilling is needed, but employers lag.

As AI and automation take hold in today’s workplace, employers are struggling to upskill their workers to meet changing needs. That was one of the key findings of the 2020 Talent Trends Report from Randstad Sourceright — only 22% of employers surveyed are currently retraining their workers for the in-demand skills of the future.

Employers recognize that talent fluidity is crucial to the future of work, with most intending to train their existing employees in analytical skills (59%), technical competencies (57%) and cloud computing (54%). An overwhelming majority (91%) believe it is their responsibility to provide reskilling in todays’ business environment. Still, the disconnect remains.

"Digitalization has changed the way we work and has redefined the skills that are most important for employees to possess," says Rebecca Henderson, CEO of Randstad global businesses and executive board member. "Yet, while employers have acknowledged that it is crucial for their businesses to reskill staff to keep up with changing technology and bolster the soft skills that only humans can possess, it is troubling that so few companies are currently offering this necessary training."
