Workplace Insight: freelancers want diverse workplaces.

October 2, 2019

The number of freelancers in the gig economy is growing exponentially. Freelancers are an increasingly important part of the workforce and they want many of the same things as their full-time counterparts. Most notable being a workplace that reflects a robust commitment to diversity and inclusion.

In fact, according to Randstad Sourceright’s 2019 Talent Trends research, 71% of surveyed contingent talent find it important to work with a company that emphasizes creating an inclusive and diverse workplace. “Employers looking to attract top talent must focus on communicating how much they value people and diverse perspectives, not just the financial value they provide,” says Rebecca Henderson, CEO, Randstad Global Businesses and executive board member.

A broader focus on diversity and inclusion in relation to your contingent workforce is a must for employers that face fierce competition for talent. Especially as projections indicate that almost half of the U.S. workforce will be comprised of independent contractors, freelancers and statement of work (SOW) talent by 2027.

“With an overwhelming majority of respondents calling for more diversity and inclusion strategies, human capital professionals should be proactive in disclosing their talent and growth strategies and be transparent in how they plan to achieve those goals,” stresses Cindy Keaveney, chief people officer of Randstad Sourceright.
