For organizations facing challenges in hiring their ideal talent or closing the skills gaps, re-examining their recruitment criteria could be an effective way to broaden the talent pool. While a bachelor’s degree is often a requirement when companies hire, it could keep skilled and talented workers out of certain positions, especially marginalized groups who may not have the same opportunities as others.
"Minorities are uniquely impacted by the inability to go to college," said Wesley Connor, vice president of global learning and development at Randstad Enterprise Group. "There is a lot of unconscious bias around those who don't have a college degree."
To ensure they don’t miss out on skilled workers and improve workplace diversity, employers should focus on hiring for skills and experience, not degrees. Connor also suggested companies should upskill and reskill their employees, such as offering internal qualification programs.
