SHRM: BLS reports lowest unemployment in 50 years.

June 5, 2019 Rebecca Henderson

With consistently low unemployment in the U.S., talent has much to celebrate. Candidates are driving the job market and reaping the rewards of 14 consecutive months with unemployment rates at or below 4%. Jobless rates are historically low across all demographics, as more opportunities open up for women, people of color and people with disabilities.
“The tight labor market has created more opportunities for women, even in sectors traditionally dominated by men,” said Rebecca Henderson, CEO of Randstad Sourceright. “In this job market, employers are giving female workers a chance they would not have otherwise, which could eventually facilitate more long-term gender balance, both in what are viewed as traditionally male roles and in the overall workplace."
Overall, the fastest-growing sectors include administrative and support services, computer systems design, construction, health care, real estate and hospitality. Manufacturing is up again, after experiencing a decline earlier this year. Retail, however, continues to lose jobs as consumers move away from brick-and-mortar stores.
