Each year, Veterans Day gives the U.S. an opportunity to honor those who have served. It’s also a reminder that veterans play an integral role in our communities and our workplaces. This year’s Monster.com survey of top veteran-friendly companies showcases those employers that have made a true commitment to recruiting, hiring and developing the talents of former military men and women.
Audra Jenkins, chief diversity and inclusion officer with Randstad North America, echoes the value that veterans bring to a company. “Veterans tend to be highly organized, natural born leaders,” she says. After years serving in military units, veterans are also uniquely suited to team-centric environments. However, they tend to have challenges communicating their experience in civilian terms.
That’s why it’s so important that recruiters are trained to translate military experience into proper placements and that managers have a development plan that leverages that experience. “If you want to retain veterans, I think it really starts with making sure you set them up for success,” says Jenkins.
